The Charm of Thrift Shopping

Why Thrift in New Orleans?

New Orleans is rich in culture and history, and its thrift stores are no exception. New Orleans thrift stores offer a unique blend of vintage finds and modern bargains, perfect for those looking to add character to their wardrobe or home.

We wrote an article a few years back on 5 Best Clothing Thrift Stores in New Orleans , but sadly a few of the places have shut down since it was published. This time we focused on thrift stores within City limits that are well known. But, don’t worry, we’ll be writing more articles on locally owned vintage stores and thrift stores in the city. Also, we’ll write about thrift stores in the suburbs of New Orleans. And then hopefully find the time to take a few day trips to thrift outside of New Orleans.

Must-Visit Thrift Stores

Out of the Closet
Trendy and Affordable
Out of the Closet Thrift Store (OTC) was founded in 1990 to help raise funds and awareness for AIDS Healthcare Foundation.
OTC are a National chain and my first experience was when I lived in Chicago. Their stores always have plenty of trendy and stylish finds at reasonable prices. Men’s, Women’s, Shoes, and Housewares. Also, a small discount section. It’s a nice size store and very clean.

Monday – Sunday: 10am – 7pm

Youth Empowerment Project
Fashionable Frugal Finds
YEP was founded in 2004 by three juvenile justice advocates as the first juvenile reentry program for formerly incarcerated children in Louisiana, and it has grown into one of the most comprehensive nonprofits in Greater New Orleans providing services to a broad range of young people and their families.
I found some great deals in this store. More than other thrift stores in the area. They have Women’s, Men’s, Shoes, and Housewares available. Also, a discount section. A lot of great places to eat in walking distance if shopping makes you hungry.
Monday – Friday: 10am – 5pm
Bridge House on Earhart
Bargains Galore

For over 65 years, it has been our mission to provide substance-use disorder treatment services to those who have lost everything.
Bridge House has always been a go-to for great finds. The Knick-Knack section is amazing and large. There’s also furniture and art for your home. As for fashion, Women in the front with Men in the back. And quite a collection of shoes and jewelry. Plenty of parking out front. And if you’re in the market for a vehicle they have those too.
Everything in store is 50% off marked price .

Monday – Saturday: 9am – 5pm

Midcity Goodwill
Budget Friendly Fashion
Goodwill provides training, job placement and career support services to help people with disabilities and other vocational disadvantages develop the skills needed to secure sustainable employment and change their lives through the power of work.
A large store that’s kept clean and gets some great finds in. They don’t seem to pick through everything for eCom as much as other stores do in the Goodwill network. Women’s, Men’s, Shoes, Housewares, Art, and Books. Also, a small furniture section. They also still have daily color tag deals that’s usually 50% off.

Monday – Saturday: 9am – 8pm
Sunday: 10am – 3pm

Salvation Army - Jefferson
Discounted Clothing and Furniture

The Salvation Army’s mission is to meet human needs without discrimination.
It’s a huge store and also a very large furniture section. I saw some really great finds there when I stopped in. Don’t pass on the furniture.
Women’s, Men’s, Shoes, Housewares (organized by color), and Art. They also have dressing rooms which is a rarity in thrift stores now.
They have 50% off on Wednesday but noticeably lowered prices on everything over the past few months. I’ve seen other monthly deals depending on the occasion.
You can also join their membership program for additional shopping discounts with every $1 you spend = 1 point. When you reach 100 points you receive $5 off.
